DETAILS The breakneck development of Costa Rica has been the story of Central America in recent years, but just to the south, in Panama, another building boom has been going on. From modern towers in Panama City to beachfront enclaves dotting the country’s coasts, new developments have been attracting a steady stream of second-home buyers and retirees from across North America. Costa Pedasí is a gated project on 235 acres at the southeastern tip of the large Azuero Peninsula, which extends into the Pacific southwest of the capital. It is offering homesites on which buyers can either build their own custom homes while adhering to architectural guidelines or work with the developer to have houses built for them. Those who take the latter option can choose from three designs, from 1,388-square-foot two-bedroom houses to 3,143-square-foot three-bedroom homes. All three designs include 12-foot ceilings, private pools and attached garages, and some have suites for live-in housekeepers. When the development is complete, there will be 120 houses. Planned amenities include a beach club with space for yoga classes; a swimming pool; walking trails; and tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. Panama City is about three and a half hours away by car.
